SIX in Venice: SIB - SKETCHINKBOOK at Ruzzini Palace

In the art exhibition at Palazzo Ruzzini, titled Six in Venice, from April 18 to Nov. 24, 2024, the artist:

SIB - SKETCHINKBOOK

Lorenzo Segale, aka SIB (Sketchinkbook) has been drawing and passionate about art since childhood, but it is only in adulthood, following graduations and years in which he consolidates his career, that he begins to consider his artistic leanings as a perspective to be investigated and to show his work to a wider audience. The point of contact between SIB and the work is a refl ection on the identity evolution of the human being, and it translates to media ranging from canvas, to stones, to skateboards with the impulsiveness of a sketch, hence the name. Making art for SIB means giving tacit vent to emotions, amalgamating them into a balance of images that, born from a unique and extremely recognizable stroke, make themselves accessible to the contaminations of visual research.

The scenario on which the viewer is asked to reflect is composed of recurring symbols and fi gures: the eye places the focus on the diff erence between looking and seeing, on the ability to grasp with thought, when closed, and on what sight perceives and accepts to scrutinize when open; the subjects' faces are often split in half to emphasize the awareness of a double soul, at other times they are subjected to an examination of conscience that leads them to break down into blobs, into areas of shadow and color, but still leaving the viewer free to assemble the image into an obvious silhouette, as if one were always faced with the choice of focusing on the individual fragmentations or on the whole of their recomposition. The color castings, which aim to erase or confuse the defi nite and characterizing features, give movement to the underlying images made flat by the texture of the acrylic and destabilize observation by training the critical capacity of the gaze

The foundation of the artistic analysis on which SIB's work is based is the contrast of bright colors and melancholic images, the oscillation between the pictorial vividness that captures the attention and the calmness conveyed by the subjects who, despite being subjected to and stimulated by the intensity of personal investigations, accept the perpetuation of the fl ush of consciousness. The intellectual stimulus that ensues creates a generative condition of thoughts and considerations and returns a maturity that offers a point of view, always different, on contemporaneity.Among the works exhibited at Palazzo Ruzzini,Bombs for breakfastandWar for lunchare part of a new series in which, while maintaining his recognizable stylistic signature, SIB reflects on the ease with which, every day, each of us receives information on issues that, more than others, populate the content in the various media forms. Without explicit ideological judgments or tendencies, SIB opens up for its users a panorama of possible interpretations of what particularly fuels current issues today: the passivity with which we scroll through images as if they were part of a daily routine or the anguish with which a different involvement makes us experience their frustrating helplessness, the refl ection on the real conditions in many areas of the globe, and the semantics of ideas and resolutions that stir the collective spirit and intellect.

All the time we have before our eyes the scroll of Instagram, a news story on the news or on the radio, a newspaper article, and we listen to the comments of strangers on the streetcar or in the queue at the supermarket ... and even passing in front of a painting we can see from the corner of our eye a spot of color, more or less attractive, or analyze it by listening to what our sensibility shows us.

Lives and works in Milan.
